In conjunction with Ramadan, the Project Monkey Team had organised a campaign called "Giving For All" which circles around the concept that the Spirit of Giving during the fasting season should be shared with everyone regardless of social standing, race and religion. We had set out to do this through two different activities.
1. Donating a meal to a blue collar worker (not taking into account whether he or she is fasting)
2. Volunteering to help vendors at the bazaar sell in exchange for the chance to encourage passer by's to donate for a stranger's iftar.
This activity was made open to public and one official event was held on the 21st of June at Kota Damansara, Seksyen 4 Bazaar. The event was made even more meaningful by the help of a friend, Bryan Chong, as he was not an official volunteer nor a Muslim. It strengthened the concept that we wanted to spread, that Ramadan is truly for ALL. As a result, we managed to get 38 people (including the vendor himself who lowered the price of customer's donating) to donate a total of 40 murtabak's which was donated for the free iftar at the Kota Damansara mosque.
What we can also conclude from this event was that people were more inclined to donate when asked personally. It was as if the intention was always there but lacked of support, example and push by those around them caused the public to not react to their intention. Malaysia still needs a lot of push to change. We are determined to keep on pushing.
Although our Ramadan project has come to a close, let us not bury the spirit of giving alongside compassion and empathy to be buried deep. Instead, let us flourish it to help those around us lead better lives. It is never about how much you give, but how much love you put into it. (Especially with raya coming up, we kids do appreciate a little more duit raya than usual!)
